A journey through the communist history of Romania is a must do in Bucharest, the place of rise and fall of the well known dictator Ceausescu.
Based on storytelling and personal experiences of the guide who lived during communist times, our tour lets you discover the stories and myths behind well-known landmarks and also shows you hidden places strongly connected to our red past. Besides that, you will also get the chance to:
If you don’t enjoy our tour, you will immediately get refunded.
The tour will start in front of Ceausescu’s greatest dream: the Palace of Parliament, second largest administrative building in the world, but only to have an introduction on how communism started and flourished in the beginning.
Afterwards, we will visit the ruins of the Uranus neighbourhood that was demolished in order to build the new civic centre, but also churches (Saint Antim Monastery and Mihai Voda Church) that were moved in an innovative way in a desperate attempt of architects and engineers to save them from being sent into oblivion.
Passing by the sad ruins of nationalized buildings, we will also see houses that barely escaped from being demolished on Justice Street. After that, we will cross on the other side of Dambovita, but not before learning what a huge influence Ceausescu had on its course.
Our next stops will be related to the Romanian Revolution: traces of bullets, the place where the revolution started, the place where Ceausescu had his last speech, the Memorial of Rebirth, but also one of the headquarters of the former Secret Police (Securitate).
The Communist Bucharest Tour will end in the University Square where all the crosses show the sacrifices of the people that died for freedom during the Revolution and you will also be introduced in the post-communist history, especially the first tragic years of democracy.

Highly recommend the Red Story - Communist tour in Bucharest. Catalina was a fantastic guide with in-depth knowledge and open in sharing her & her families experiences through this period. She went above and beyond to ensure I had an enjoyable tour.
My girlfriend and I booked this tour, and we met Catalina in the meeting point in the Unirii Boulevard, just to see that we were the only ones on the tour! So, it became the most intimate walking tour we had ever had! Catalina was charming and interesting all the time, showing us al the pros and cons of the communist regime of Nicolae Ceaucescu. We learned a lot! We also tasted typical chocolate bars from that time, and even we took photos with the handkerchief that children wore at school as members of the Pioneers. I f you have time to spend on Bucharest, and you are eager to know about the life under the Ceaucescu regime and the Revolution of 1989, do not hesitate and book this tour.
